On Thursday, September 18, 2025, the Alliance Française de San Francisco will present Richard, a bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s Richard III by French director and performer Antony De Azevedo.
This 75-minute production transports the audience into the surreal setting of the Paris metro, where power, madness, and fantasy intertwine. Antony De Azevedo shares the stage with Poppée Bashung, who embodies multiple Shakespearean characters, from Lady Anne to Death itself.
The play follows the journey of a homeless man whose discovery of a discarded king cake crown sparks a hallucinatory descent into power and obsession. With scenography by Citronelle Dufay, the production draws inspiration from the worlds of David Lynch and Luc Besson, blending Shakespearean tragedy with urban surrealism.
Performed in French, Richard is presented in collaboration with Impact Productions.
