A borderless performance — poetic, humorous, and deeply human. This February, the Théâtre du Lycée Français de San Francisco presents Frantz, a singular creation by Marc Granier and Compagnie BPM that reimagines theatrical language through a subtle blend of mime, live sound effects, and visual storytelling.
A true theatrical oddity, Frantz follows the journey of a young office worker whose meticulously ordered life is suddenly disrupted by a deeply personal event. On stage, very few words are spoken: everything unfolds through gesture, rhythm, sound, and imagination.
For the first time at TLF, the performance is fully accessible to audiences who do not speak French, breaking down language barriers and opening the experience to all.
Trained at the prestigious Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School, the five performers display remarkable physical and sonic virtuosity. While one actor embodies Frantz in a nearly empty space, three performer-sound artists create the entire soundscape live — from the whisper of the wind to the hum of an office or the rhythmic clatter of a photocopier — using everyday objects with astonishing creativity.
At the crossroads of theater, silent cinema, and sound design, Frantz delicately explores solitude, grief, and the passage into adulthood, while celebrating the beauty of life’s small, often overlooked moments. The French press has praised the show’s originality, drawing comparisons to the worlds of Jacques Tati, Wes Anderson, and The Triplets of Belleville.
Recommended for ages 10 and up, this 80-minute performance is an ideal outing for families and friends — French speakers and non-French speakers alike. No subtitles, no dictionary required: emotion flows freely through humor, tenderness, and precise physical choreography.
