Tucked away in San Mateo lies Bonjour Bakehouse, a French bakery serving artisanal baked goods that are truly worth the trip.
From their “hole in the wall” – as they like to call it – Ingrid, François and their team serve delicious baked goods (sweet and savory scones, croissants and pains au chocolat), as well as excellent coffee. Located inside KitchenTown, Bonjour Bakehouse offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the Bay area.

Hailing from France, the duo wanted clients to come to Bonjour Bakehouse to buy “super products and because we are nice.” And it worked!
I discovered the place on an early crisp Monday morning, and loved it. Neighbors come to say hi and grab breakfast while commuters take their first call enjoying a delicious “chocolatine” from the sunny terrace. On week-ends, François and Ingrid’s kids – who urged their parents to open on week-end so they could help out – are the ones welcoming clients.
Ingredients are sourced locally, fruits from San Mateo farmers market, and the packaging is 100% compostable – I love it!
What’s next? Bonjour Bakehouse cookies will soon be available in vending machines at local airports SFO and Oakland. Keep your eyes peeled and tag us @bonjourbakehouse or @mercisf once you spot the machines!
Take a leap, wander outside of SF and Palo Alto, and drive 25 minutes South or North. Come for the baked goods – my pick: Goat cheese scones and the croissants – and stay for the good vibes and the great company!
