On April 11, 2026, San Francisco will once again stay up late for one of the most stimulating cultural events of the year: Night of Ideas (La Nuit des Idées), a global initiative led by Villa Albertine. Hosted across the San Francisco Public Library and the Asian Art Museum, this free, marathon-style event brings together artists, thinkers, scientists, and the public from 3pm to midnight for an immersive exploration of ideas shaping our future.
Created in 2016 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Night of Ideas has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, now spanning more than 100 countries and 300 cities. In the U.S. alone, 18 cities participate in 2026. In San Francisco, the event has steadily gained traction over the years, becoming a key moment of intellectual and cultural exchange in the Bay Area. Previous editions have drawn diverse audiences — from tech professionals and artists to students and families — reflecting the city’s unique intersection of innovation and culture.
This year’s theme, “Lighting the Way,” invites participants to reflect on how ideas, creativity, and collective action can illuminate the future.
The 2026 edition promises an especially rich program, blending performance, debate, and hands-on experiences. Among the French and francophone highlights curataed by Villa Albertine: Victor Le Masne, composer of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, brings a French Touch performance premiere in San Francisco with a live string quartet; Valentin Schmite explores AI in cultural mediation with interactive “talking sculptures” inspired by Versailles; Eric Blaze, a key figure in the Paris hip-hop scene, leads a beatmaking masterclass and joins a transatlantic conversation on music culture; Valérie Brisset- the newly appointed Consule Genérale of France in San Francisco – will participates in a panel on the meaning and evolution of Night of Ideas; and Pascal Molat brings dance to the public with a pop-up ballet barre workshop.
Beyond these highlights, the program spans topics from ethical AI and quantum science to Afrofuturism, climate innovation, and underwater robotics, featuring leading voices such as Oussama Khatib and Jennifer Dionne. Visitors can also explore exhibitions, workshops, live performances, and even enjoy stargazing from the library’s rooftop terrace.
Before the evening program, the Afternoon of Ideas welcomes families with interactive activities including dance workshops, storytelling, science experiments, and creative labs designed to spark curiosity across generations. This dual format — daytime for families, nighttime for deeper discussions — has become a defining feature of recent San Francisco editions.
Night of Ideas is built on community — and this year, organizers are actively seeking volunteers to help bring the event to life. From welcoming guests to assisting with programming and logistics, volunteering offers a unique behind-the-scenes experience at one of the Bay Area’s most dynamic cultural gatherings. Apply here
At a time when public discourse often feels fragmented, Night of Ideas creates a rare space for collective reflection and dialogue — bridging disciplines, cultures, and communities. In true San Francisco spirit, it’s where art meets technology, local meets global, and ideas turn into action.
