Earth Day 2024 will mark the 54th anniversary of the annual global event that celebrates our planet and raises awareness about environmental issues. This year’s theme is “Planet vs.Plastics,” highlighting the urgent need to tackle the plastics crisis and aiming for a bold 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.

Earth Day 2024, celebrated globally on April 22, will provide an opportunity for individuals and communities around the world to come together, take action, and make a difference in protecting the environment. From planting trees to reducing plastic waste, there are countless ways to get involved and make a positive impact on the planet this Earth Day.

Here are 5 impactful ways to celebrate Earth Day in the Bay this April:

SF Climate Week

Participate in SF Climate Week to educate yourself on major environmental issues and solutions to tackle the climate crisis. SF Climate Week is a series of events gathering diverse climate organizations, leaders, & the broader community working at the intersection of climate action & innovation. The City’s second annual week-long climate event will be packed with insightful conferences, educational workshops and networking opportunities with experts in the field.

Climate Fresk 

Climate Fresk is a fun, participative yet 100% science-based serious game about climate change. In just 3 hours, players will work together to connect causes and effects of climate change, learn about the science from the IPCC: the United Nations panel of scientists that has been studying climate change since 1988; and discuss ways to help reduce the effects of climate change. For the San Francisco Climate Week, Climate Fresk is organizing a series of free, public workshops, join and bring friends!

Earth Day Festival in San Francisco

Come to San Francisco’s annual Earth Day festival for a full day of activism, inspiration and innovation. This family-friendly free event will feature food, art, live music by local bands and workshops lo learn ways to reduce waste, create organic gardens, eat clean, and much more!

Save the Bay Cleanup in Oakland

earth day MerciSF Volunteer 2Save The Bay is on a mission to protect and restore the Bay for people and wildlife. The Oakland-based nonprofit organization will be hosting a cleanup at Damon Slough, a heavily impacted estuary at the end of the Lion Creek and Arroyo Viejo Creek watersheds. The salt marshes in the area catch a lot of the pollutants that wash down into the creeks which can be pulled out to stop causing harm in the bay.
