San Francisco Opera presents La Bohème, a timeless portrayal of love and loss set in 19th-century Paris, running from June 3 to June 21, 2025. While Puccini’s music and the Italian libretto by Illica and Giacosa are iconic, the opera’s soul is unmistakably French — inspired by Scènes de la vie de bohème by French writer Henri Murger. This poetic foundation gives the opera its emotional depth and vivid portrayal of bohemian life.
Directed by John Caird, this production offers a captivating blend of youthful passion, artistic dreams, and heartbreak — all underlined by the lyrical beauty of Puccini’s score.
Performed in Italian with English supertitles, it’s a must-see for opera lovers and newcomers alike.
Date: June 3 to June 21, 2025
