Auction, directed by Pascal Bonitzer, will be screened by French Premiere on September 18 in Palo Alto and on September 19 in San Francisco, marking the return of this organization dedicated to French cinema.
This drama, inspired by true events, follows André Masson, an auctioneer confronted with the discovery of an Egon Schiele painting stolen by the Nazis in 1939. This find represents both an opportunity and a threat to André’s career, leading him into a fierce struggle to maintain his professional integrity. Bonitzer, true to his style, alternates between comedy and drama to explore the underbelly of the art market and its cynical aspects.

Speaking about the title of his film, Bonitzer shares: “The Stolen Painting is a tribute to my friend Raoul Ruiz and his film The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting.” The director, known for introspective stories like Right Here Right Now (2016), delves into a plot where truth and lies intertwine, driven by vibrant characters, including Aurore, a whimsical intern. The cast, led by Alex Lutz, Léa Drucker, Louise Chevillotte, and Nora Hamzawi, brings to life this tableau where the authenticity of art clashes with the harsh reality of money.
