Update Sept 22 : new date & venue – The twins of the Ibeyi duo, Lisa and Naomi, were born in Paris. While their mother, Maya Dagnino, was born in France to a Venezuelan father and a Tunisian mother, their father was Cuban percussionist Anga Díaz, a member of the group Buena Vista Social Club with Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, and Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz aka Compay Segundo.
When he died, the two sisters, then aged 11, learned to play the cajón, their father’s favorite instrument, and studied Yoruba folk music.
The duo mixes Yoruba culture with other musical genres such as soul, R&B, Downtempo, and hip hop. They also pay homage to Santería, a syncretism practiced by many Afro-Cubans.
