Parisian romance, irresistible temptation, and heartbreaking choices take center stage as San Francisco Opera presents Manon, the French masterpiece by Jules Massenet, from October 15 through November 1, 2026, at the War Memorial Opera House.
First performed in Paris in 1884, Manon tells the story of a young woman torn between true love and the promise of a more glamorous life. On her way to a convent, Manon meets the handsome Chevalier des Grieux, and the two fall passionately in love. But in a world where money, status, and desire collide, their romance takes a dramatic turn.
With its lush melodies and emotional intensity, Massenet’s opera remains one of the great classics of French opera, exploring themes of love, freedom, ambition, and the price of following one’s desires.
This production brings together an impressive international cast, with soprano Amina Edris as Manon and acclaimed Samoan tenor Pene Pati as Des Grieux. San Francisco Opera Music Director Eun Sun Kim conducts, while French director Vincent Boussard returns with his visually striking staging, combining elegant costumes and cinematic theatricality.
Performed in French with English supertitles, Manon offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of French opera right here in San Francisco, whether you’re a longtime opera lover or discovering Massenet for the first time.
