A scandalous painting that became an icon of modern art.
From May 16 to September 13, 2026, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents “Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal”, a major exhibition dedicated to one of Henri Matisse’s most revolutionary masterpieces.
First shown at the 1905 Salon d’Automne in Paris, Femme au chapeau shocked audiences with its bold colors and radical departure from realistic representation. This portrait of his wife Amélie marked a decisive turning point in art history and became a founding image of Fauvism.
The exhibition traces the fascinating journey of the painting, from its acquisition by renowned American collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein to its arrival in San Francisco, where it remains one of SFMOMA’s treasures. It also highlights the central role of Amélie Matisse as muse, partner, and creative force in her own right.
Featuring more than 90 works, the exhibition explores the painting’s lasting influence—from Fauvist artists to contemporary figures like David Hockney, and Bay Area artists such as Richard Diebenkorn.
Highlights include an exceptional reconstruction of the 1905 Salon d’Automne, offering visitors a chance to relive the artistic shock that gave rise to Fauvism.
Also not to miss: a free admission day on May 24, and a festive “Hat Party” on May 17 to celebrate the exhibition.
Dates: May 16 – September 13, 2026
Address: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 151 Third Street, San Francisco
