The de Young Museum invites visitors on an exceptional journey between France and Italy with Monet and Venice, a major exhibition dedicated to one of the most fascinating chapters of Claude Monet’s career.
Presented for the first time in over a century as a cohesive ensemble, the exhibition brings together Monet’s celebrated Venetian paintings, created during his only trip to Venice in 1908. Through these works, the Impressionist master captures a city that feels both real and almost unreal, where architecture, water, and light dissolve into a vibrant, ever-shifting atmosphere.

Featuring more than 100 works — including paintings, documents, and archival materials — the exhibition places Monet’s Venetian views in dialogue with key moments of his career, notably his iconic Water Lilies, while also connecting them to other artists inspired by La Serenissima.
Monet and Venice also offers an immersive experience, blending paintings, historical archives, and an original soundscape, creating a sensory journey into the lagoon city as Monet perceived it — a place where time seems suspended and light becomes omnipresent.
Organized by the Brooklyn Museum in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, this exceptional exhibition provides a rare opportunity to rediscover Monet’s late and daring artistic approach at a pivotal moment in his life.
