A drawing of a beautiful house, a red door crowning a double staircase, wrapped in leafy trees.
A quote by Jean Hoefliger, the winemaker: “Enjoy the moments that truly matter, with those who matter most.”
This was how AxR, a wine estate in St. Helena, made its first impression on me during a tasting organized by classmates in Palo Alto.

Jean’s journey began far from California. Raised in a family of lawyers in Switzerland, he had no interest in law and considered himself a “failure” for leaving law school after only two years. Instead, Jean took a leap of faith, helping at his godfather’s wine estate in Lavaux—a UNESCO World Heritage site near Lausanne, and among the most beautiful places on earth. Six months of hands-on learning led to a pivotal challenge: his godfather insisted he learn winemaking in California. Jean moved continents and began a global apprenticeship, working at Michel Schlumberger and Hartford in Sonoma, Meerlust in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and Château Carbonnieux and Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, France.
The real breakthrough came when a cellar master challenged Jean to name a wine’s nine parameters; Jean guessed 8, out of luck according to him, yet forging a new confidence in his abilities.

After honing his skills at top wineries, Jean returned to Napa craving modernity and creativity. With a Swiss father and American mother, he has always thrived at the crossroads of Old World tradition and New World innovation. “Europe, France, Switzerland—they’re all about wine tradition; the US is fast to innovate.” With a personal cellar holding 25,000 bottles. Jean compares wine to “liquid poetry”— equal parts science and emotion.

In 2015, after years at Newton and Alpha Omega, Jean co-founded AxR with three friends—the “Fab 4.” Today, he also consults for winemakers across the globe: Oregon, Paso Robles, Sonoma, Texas, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, and produces up to 350 wines per year—almost one a day. Full of energy, Jean co-founded The Debate, crafting wines designed to start conversations.

About AxR
AxR stands for Aramon mixed with Rupestris, a rootstock developed by Victor Ganzin in 1879 (that’s wine tradition for you) amid the phylloxera plague in both Europe and the United States. The brand starts with “A” to anchor it on every wine list, and the “x” catches the eye. The love for detail is so Swiss—just like Jean.
“I am all about multiculturalism, and AxR is the perfect match between the US and Europe: a modern brand with an innovative DNA and a traditional philosophy.” Jean reminds us that wine consumption is still different between Europe and the US – an everyday staple in Europe, a luxury in the US. AXR’s mission remains: pleasure, quality, humility, and genuine human connection.

How to enjoy AxR wine?

Come to the St. Helena estate and taste for yourself. Visiting AxR means stepping into a warm, relaxed space where jokes abound, and tastings begin with a stroll, and a picture, among the redwoods. Jean believes you really have to visit to understand AxR: arrive curious, mention MerciSF, and expect a special welcome.
My personal favorites: the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2020 Gamaret, featuring grapes from Lavaux, the very same place where Jean’s wine adventure began over 30 years ago. Full circle!
