Under a gentle October sun, deep emotion filled Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Westborough Royale Assisted Living in South San Francisco. Surrounded by his family, the 4th Company of the San Francisco Fire Department, and the Deputy Mayor of South San Francisco, Edmond John Bordenave, a 102-year-old American veteran born in San Francisco, received the Legion of Honor, France’s highest distinction.

The medal was presented to him by the Consul General of France, Florian Cardinaux, in recognition of his exceptional courage and his role in the liberation of France.

Born in San Francisco in 1923, Edmond Bordenave served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, notably aboard the USS LST-512, a landing ship that took part in the June 6, 1944 operation in Normandy. His commitment to the follow-up resupply and support missions helped secure the Allies’ victory and restore freedom in Europe.

“By honoring Mr. Bordenave, we also celebrate the unwavering friendship between France and the United States,” emphasized Consul General Florian Cardinaux, visibly moved by this moment of remembrance and legacy.

By bestowing this honor on Edmond Bordenave, France expresses its eternal gratitude to those who risked their lives for its freedom.

Amid applause and tearful glances, the ceremony brought together a diverse audience, united by a shared message of gratitude and humanity.
