The Night of Ideas 2025, themed “(un)Common Ground”, returns to San Francisco on April 5, 2025, transforming San Francisco Public Library, Fulton Plaza and for the first time the Asian Art Museum into a hub for dialogue, art, and civic engagement.
Join Villa Albertine San Francisco, KQED, the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco Public Library, along with artistic curating partner Circuit Network, for another inspiring marathon of talks, live performances, workshops, food, art and collective imagination!
Through 30 panels and interactive experiences, the event explores the role of civil society in bridging divides, fostering dialogue on AI’s impact on human connection, contested speech, global diplomacy, and cultural evolution. Highlights include AI expert Luc Julia, legal scholars debating university neutrality, and novelist Laila Lalami discussing thought-crimes in literature. Panels will also examine trans-Pacific partnerships, diasporic identities, and the future of welfare policies across continents.
Panel Highlight – Gourmet Cities: How Food Cultures Shape Public Space
From Parisian cafés to San Francisco’s food trucks and farmers’ markets, food plays a vital role in shaping urban life. Can it also help revitalize San Francisco’s downtown? Moderated by Arthur Perez, Senior Urban Designer, SITELAB Urban Studio, this panel brings together urban designers, planners, and food entrepreneurs to explore how food culture influences public spaces, who benefits, and how cities can better integrate food into their urban fabric.
Beyond discussions, the night celebrates artistic expression with film retrospectives, culinary fusions, live music, fashion, and dance performances. Attendees can explore a skateboarding exhibition, a small business marketplace, and the grand unveiling of the SPECTRA Public Light Sculpture.
Festivities culminate in an SF Discothèque dance party. With a mix of intellectual rigor and cultural celebration, this year’s Night of Ideas invites the community to engage, reflect, and connect in a world increasingly defined by difference.
Initiated by Villa Albertine, this free public event convenes scholars, artists, and policymakers for a night of debates, performances, and immersive experiences. Since its inception in 2016 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Night of Ideas has been hosted in more than 100 countries and 300 cities worldwide, with 25 U.S. cities participating in 2025.
