“Le Montespan” tells the story of the Marquis de Montespan, a young man without money who marries the beautiful Françoise de Rochechouart in 1663. To win the favor of the King and settle his debts, the Marquis goes to war, leaving his wife at court. However, the King is seduced by the young woman and makes her his new favorite. Consumed by jealousy and love for his wife, the Marquis de Montespan declares a merciless war on the monarch, refusing all honors due to his status as a “royal cuckold” and even adorning his carriage with gigantic horns.

The play thus explores the challenge to the legitimacy of absolute monarchy by one of the first historical figures to do so.
