We share a list of places to buy the French  King’s Cake – aka Galette des Rois – in the San Francisco Bay Area. This dessert is a French tradition that marks the end of the holiday season.

The official day to enjoy the famous cake is January 6, the Epiphany day, but most French people start right after Christmas and continue until the end of January. It is usually served with apple juice, cider, or sparkling wine.

The ritual has its origins in ancient Rome, where the population designated a slave as the “king for the day.” It was an opportunity for slaves to be served by their master before being executed or returning to their slave status the next day…

The galette, especially the “Galette des Rois,” is a French passion: around 30 to 32 million galettes are consumed each year in France. The “Galette des Rois” represents about 10% of the annual turnover of artisan bakers.

From North to South and East, we have listed bakeries in San Francisco and the Bay Area that will help you satisfy your “Galette des Rois” cravings. Our list seems quite comprehensive, but if you are not on it or know of another bakery where to find the galette, please contact us by email.
