Musicians from Ireland and Brittany are coming together to celebrate Samhain, the Celtic festival that marks the beginning of the “darker half” of the year and gave rise to Halloween in the US. Known as Kalan Goañv in Brittany, this festival signifies a time when the boundary between the living and the Otherworld becomes thin.
In San Francisco, it’s a Celtic complement to Día de los Muertos celebrations. The event, titled “Celtic Samhain: Colm Ó Riain & Breizh Amerika Collective“ features Irish-born virtuoso violinist Colm Ó Riain and his band, who explore the connections between various musical worlds, and the Breizh Amerika Collective, which brings innovative musicians Thomas Moisson et Roland Cone from Brittany, France, and the US together to create original music and raise awareness about endangered traditions. The event takes place on October 26th at the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco
