Le Mépris -Contempt- one of the most remarkable films of the French New Wave, celebrates its 60th anniversary. Selected in the Cannes Classic category at this year’s festival, this masterpiece of world cinema, directed by the enfant terrible of cinema, Jean-Luc Godard, was released in a restored version in June and is available in 4K UHD for the first time.
Featuring the icon Brigitte Bardot (And God Created Woman, Viva Maria!) in the role of Camille, and the legendary French talent Michel Piccoli (Belle de jour, The Things of Life) as Paul, LE MÉPRIS also boasts a solid and eclectic supporting cast, including the “master of darkness,” director Fritz Lang, in his own role, the famous American actor Jack Palance as Jeremy, and the renowned Giorgia Moll as Francesca. The restoration also includes the original and unforgettable soundtrack, “Thème de Camille,” which has garnered worldwide admiration, composed by the multi-award-winning composer Georges Delerue.
Set around the extraordinary Villa Malaparte on the island of Capri, LE MÉPRIS tells the tragic romance between Paul and his wife, Camille. Paul is tasked with rewriting a film script. While he becomes absorbed in writing, he appears to ignore the producer’s interest in his irresistibly beautiful wife, Camille. Then… we witness the painful unraveling of Paul and Camille’s marriage.
