Here is a list of places to find King’s cakes (aka Galette des Rois) in San Francisco Bay; this dessert is a French tradition that marks the end of the holiday season.

The official day to eat the famous cake is January 6th, the day of Epiphany, but most French start just after Christmas day and eat some until the end of January. It is usually served with apple juice, cider, or sparkling wine.

The ritual takes its origins in Antique Rome where the population was designating a slave as the “king of the day”. It was the opportunity for slaves to get served by their master before being executed or go back to their slave condition the next day…

The galette, and in particular the galette des Rois, is a French passion: about 30 to 32 million galettes are sold each year in France. The galette des Rois represents around 10% of the annual turnover of artisan bakers.

We have listed the bakeries of the Bay Area that will help us keep the craving intact.
