The famous Bay to Breakers footrace is back after the pandemic and it is good news! But did you know that it all started after the 1906 earthquake to lift the city’s spirit?

This race is known too because it has never changed length or course over the decades. It has even entered the Guinness book of records in 1986 with 110,000 participants as the world’s largest footrace back then.

Now that you know the basics, be ready for the details. If you are new to the event, you have to understand that there are two races in one:

  • the sports race whose goal is to run from the Embarcadero at Main Street and Howard (The Bay) to Ocean beach parking lot (the Breakers) in the fastest manner possible, just like any other race with water, sneakers and energy bars if needed. This serious race is notable as it includes running uphill… It crosses San Francisco after all.
  • the crazy race consists of covering the same course but in the funniest manner possible. In this second version of the race, water consumption is optional and might be replaced by other drinks, outfits can be creative or reduced to the minimum; silly behavior is permitted including playing music on the go.

In both cases, the complete course is 7.46 miles (12.01 km) long.

If you feel ready for the adventure, you have to enroll and your name will probably be in the SF Examiner the next morning; the local newspaper used to print all registered participants’ names. If you want to go for the freestyle adventure, find a bunch of friends and enjoy your day.

Update on 5/9: The French Running Club members will all come dressed in a French Costume (think beret, baguette, etc…) and will meet at 7:45am at Mission & Embarcadero for a photo just before the race. All the details click –>  here  Come and join them in your best French outfit!

Date: Sunday May 15th, 2022 from 8 am onwards.
Registration here – Registration closes one hour before the race starts.
