Whether you are a computer scientist, an oceanographer, or an advocate of healthy oceans wanting to enhance human/ocean harmony, fight ocean pollution and map ocean circulation, this Hackaton is for you.
For its 6th edition, the event will regroup more than 1000 participants in 16 cities around the world.
The San Francisco local edition of the Hackathon is organized by the Office for Science and Technology of the French Embassy, with the support of Sustainable Ocean Alliance and Bank of the West. They brought together a large community of experts from Google X, NASA, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and many more.
San Francisco has received the following eight challenges:
- Downscaling Oceanographic Data
- Integration of Environmental Data to Autonomous Navigation Systems
- Mapping of regional/global distributions of blue carbon resources
- Automated mapping of beach cleanup effort
- Real-time monitoring of ocean circulation
- Harnessing the Power of the Ocean with Prefabricated Coastal Communities
- Ocean Noise Pollution
- Solutions to capture plastic pollution️

In a team of 6 participants that will be done per center of interest, you will brainstorm for 48 hours around a challenge, develop a prototype and refine your pitch with the help of high-level mentors. San Francisco’s winning team will win a trip to France to represent the City by the Bay and compete with the other local winning teams during the International Grand Finale planned for December 2021 in Brittany!!

Ocean Hackathon is a 48-hour challenge that aims to address the ocean’s greatest challenges by enhancing the value of marine and maritime data through innovation. This hackathon is an initiative from the Campus Mondial de la Mer in France, which encourages sharing the use of new digital technologies, and an entrepreneurial spirit to fight for our ocean. Since it was first launched in 2016, Ocean Hackathon has brought together a new community around the ocean and digital environments. In 2021, the Ocean Hackathon® has been endorsed as a Decade Activity by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
