Join acclaimed Bay Area artist Paul Kos for an afternoon of petanque at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in Napa Valley.
He will leverage this special petanque tournament on October 2nd, to give a brief lecture on the relationship between petanque and the role it plays in his creative process for decades. It has been particularly important while working on his masterpiece Chartres Bleu (1982-1986) currently exposed at the di Rosa museum.
Chartres Bleu is a video work that represents a life-size reconstruction of a stained glass window in Chartres Cathedral. Twenty-seven monitors, stacked vertically, show the famous church’s glass panels over a twenty-four-hour period, condensed into twelve minutes. The readability of the narrative scenes depicted changes with the light throughout the day. The work is on permanent display at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in Napa.
The lecture will precede the re-opening of his in-situ installation Zizi Va (1994), a functional petanque court recently renovated for continuous public use at di Rosa.

Zizi Va consists of two petanque outdoor courts recently renovated for continuous public use at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art. But the most intriguing part of this installation, is the wooden cabinet housing a sculptural installation with a male version of Etant donnés by Marcel Duchamp, visible through a small peephole!
Finally, Kos and his guests will participate in a tournament with as a prize a golden petanque ball signed by Kos as well as memberships to the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art for each member of the winning team.
One can attend without registering as a simple spectator, but those wishing to participate in the tournament are encouraged to register in advance. The tournament is limited to eight teams of three players. Access to the park is authorized only if there is space on the day of the event.
